Tanzania aims to lead as food hub in East Africa

Samia Suluhu Hassan Tanzania president

Tanzania's government has revealed plans to make the country a regional food hub.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who announced the plan during a roundtable discussion in Des Moines, USA, said the project aims to make the East African country self-sufficient in food production and supplies.

She highlighted three major ways this project will help the country.

With the project underway she said, there will be adequate food which will translate into reduced food prices for all citizens.

The plan also aims to encourage food storage and processing to reduce waste after harvest and add value through food processing.

The third goal is to turn Tanzania into a “food basket” for East Africa, and possibly Southern Africa.

“We haven’t reached the target yet, but I assure you, we are on track,” she was quoted as saying.

To help achieve these goals, Tanzania has set up the Presidential Advisory Agricultural Council.

“The council is doing a good job of advising the government on how to enhance Tanzania’s impact on food delivery and food security,” the President noted.
