Residents living in Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott are struggling for water.

In the Tarhil district, many homes lack running water.

Although authorities have provided street tanks and water tankers, residents say this is not enough.

“Even 100 jerry cans aren’t enough to feed our families and animals in the heat,” one resident Khadidjatou Taher told the AFP.

Tarhil’s population has grown with urbanisation, but water access remains limited.

Some pipes were installed years ago but remain dry.

“The tankers that supply us are often late,” said El Id Ahmed, another local resident.

Many residents depend on vendors who deliver water using carts or pick-up trucks.

Water shortages worsened after pipe failures during recent rains. Mauritania’s government plans to expand water networks and build a desalination plant, but progress has been slow.

More than 22% of the country’s people lack drinking water, according to UNICEF.
