Protesters teargassed as Malawi's fuel crisis sparks outrage: Video

Fuel shortage protest in Malawi

Hundreds of frustrated citizens took to the streets of Lilongwe, Malawi's capital, on November 25 to protest against the government’s handling of an escalating fuel crisis.

The nation has endured weeks of severe fuel shortages, which have disrupted businesses, increased transportation costs, and slowed economic activity across the country.

The protesters demanded the resignations of Energy and Mining Minister Ibrahim Matola and Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Henry Kachaje, accusing them of failing to resolve the crisis.

The demonstration, however, was short-lived after police arrived within an hour and used tear gas to disperse the crowd, ending the protest abruptly.

Last week, Matola in a public appeal urged Malawians to remain calm and cooperate in addressing the crisis. He called on citizens to avoid panic buying and report any malpractices, including hoarding, price manipulation, or illegal fuel vending.

Malawi has now entered the sixth week of the fuel crisis, according to local reports, hospitals and emergency services failed to maintain operations due to the shortage.
