The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has reported a surge in voter registration as nearly one million Ivorians applied to join the electoral roll for the first time ahead of the country’s 2025 presidential election.

The IEC received 943,157 first-time registration applications during a recent month-long revision of the electoral lists, a sharp increase from the 575,489 new applicants recorded during the previous 2022–2023 review.

The latest figures represent nearly a quarter of the estimated number of potential new voters, according to Bamba Siaka, Vice President of the IEC.

These applications were complemented by 517,927 existing voters seeking modifications to their registration details, including changes to polling stations or personal information. Among the new registrants, 511,125 were men and 432,032 were women.

"As far as new voters are concerned, the gross figures recorded, which represent almost a quarter of the potential number of new voters expected, are encouraging, as they are, by way of comparison, a clear improvement on the figures for the 2022-2023 electoral census, when 575,489 new applicants were registered on the provisional electoral roll," said Siaka during a press briefing.

He added, "The Independent Electoral Commission salutes the combined efforts of the population, its agents, and its commissioners, who have made it possible to achieve this result. It is counting on the involvement of all in the coming stages of this operation to revise the Electoral Roll."

Further updates on voter registration and preparations are expected in the coming months.
