CEO and founder of Beba Beggie Charles Oduk demonstrates how to use one of his lockers in Nairobi on October 23, 2023.
Rwanda is set to enhance its postal services with the introduction of smart e-locker technology, according to Charles Oduk, founder of Bebba-Beggie, a Kenyan company specialising in these innovative lockers.
Oduk revealed that his company is in discussions with the Rwandan government to bring their smart locker technology to the country.
These e-lockers provide secure storage for customers' goods, with access granted through a simple verification process using a phone number and password.
“We were approached by the Rwandan government. Part of that conversation is still ongoing on how we can use the lockers for digitising their postal address system,” Oduk told GSW’s Wonder Hagan.
He emphasised that the new technology would significantly improve Rwanda's current postal service.
“Sooner or later, if you are receiving a parcel or a letter, you’ll just need to go to the locker, enter your phone number, and easily check out your items without having to visit the post office or queue,” he explained.
Currently, less than 1% of Rwanda's population is connected to a post office, often leading to long queues and limited access.
The government has been working with various companies to develop a more digitised system to encourage greater use of postal services and streamline the process.
