The controversy erupted after a leaked medical report surfaced this week, claiming that Khelif, who won gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has XY chromosomes, typically associated with males.
According to a report published by Reduxx, medical records accessed by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia indicate that Khelif has "testicles" and an XY chromosome pattern, suggesting a condition related to sexual development.
The report was allegedly compiled in June 2023 through a collaboration between Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers.
IOC who labelled the report as "unverified documents whose origin cannot be confirmed" says that Khelif's legal proceedings will be against those responsible for the leaked report and the subsequent media coverage.
Although she was born female and does not identify as transgender or intersex, her participation in the Olympics sparked widespread controversy. This was especially evident on social media after Italian boxer Angela Carini forfeited their Olympic bout just 46 seconds into the match.
This is not the first legal journey the celebrated boxer is embarking on. Imane Khelif, 25, who received a hero's welcome upon her return to Algeria after her Olympic triumph, has already filed a complaint in France for online harassment.
The lawsuit, filed with French authorities, alleges British author J.K. Rowling, known for the Harry Potter book franchise and SpaceX founder Elon Musk contributed to the cyberbullying she endured during and after the 2024 Olympics through their public comments and social media posts.
The IOC has expressed its support for Khelif, condemning the abuse she has faced and emphasising that all athletes at the Paris 2024 Games complied with the competition's eligibility and medical regulations.
"The IOC is saddened by the abuse that Imane Khelif is currently receiving," a spokesperson said.
